SCB Africa Section Communications/E-mentoring Program

Call for Applications - Deadline: Sept 15, 2014

The Africa Section of the Society for Conservation Biology (SCB) has announced a call for applicants who want to participate in the 2014/2015 phase of the SCB Africa Section Communications/E-mentoring Program. A successful pilot of the program occurred from August 2007- March 2008 and its goal is to increase the capacity of African student conservation biologists to publish and disseminate their research in international peer review journals. For more information and requirements for would be mentors and mentees e-mail Mary Molokwu (mary.molokwu@gmail.com) or Stephen Awoyemi (sawoyemi@gmail.com).

Upcoming Grant Deadlines

AuthorAid - Workshop Grants - Deadline: Aug 31 (workshop grants)

AuthorAID announces its second round of small grants to support researchers in developing countries with workshops. AuthorAID plans to award four workshop grants ($2,500 each). Applications are invited from nationals of the following countries:  Bangladesh, Bolivia, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Ghana, Honduras, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, Nepal, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Uganda, Vietnam, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. 

Pacsafe Turtle Fund - Deadline: Aug 31, 2014

The Pacsafe Turtle Fund is a new initiative to support the worldwide conservation of endangered sea turtles such as the leatherback, loggerhead, green, and hawksbill turtles. Applicants contact Pacsafe to request project criteria and an application form.

Prince Bernhard Nature Fund - Deadlines: Mar 1 & Sept 1 (annually)

The Prince Bernhard Nature Fund (Netherlands) aims to help save critically endangered flora and fauna in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, and Latin America. It gives funding preference to organizations in these regions, sometimes in partnership with parties in Europe or North America. Grants are up to €25,000.

US National Science Foundation Geography and Spatial Sciences Program - Deadline: Sept 4, 2014

The NSF funds an annual competition for research on the geographic distributions and interactions of human, physical, and biotic systems on the Earth's surface. Projects on a variety of topics (U.S. and international) qualify for support if they offer promise of enhancing geographical knowledge, concepts, theories, methods, and their application to societal problems and concerns. Past projects include several in the world's developing countries related to environmental disasters, waste management, marine spatial planning, wildlife conservation, and others.

Toyota Foundation Research Grants Program - Application Period: Aug 25 - Sept 5, 2014

The Toyota Foundation supports a Research Grants Program on the general theme of knowledge to build a better future.  Grants will be made to organizations as well as individuals.  There are no restrictions by nationality, affiliation, academic background, or area of residence.  Past grants in this program include several in areas related to agriculture, environment, and natural resources. 

British Ecological Society Research Grants - Deadline: Sept 8, 2014

The BES makes Research Grants in support of scientific ecological research where there are limited alternative sources of funding. Small projects can be awarded up to £5,000, and early-career ecologists can apply for funding up to £20,000. There are no restrictions on nationality or residence of applicants, or where they carry out their research work. See Africa specific opportunities here.

Goldberg Conservation Grants - Deadline: Sept 15, 2014

Goldberg Conservation Grants are for new or established conservation efforts that build lasting, positive relationships between primates and their human neighbors, in order to improve the health and welfare of both.

Zoos Victoria Conservation Grants - Deadline: Sept 30, 2014

Zoos Victoria (Australia) helps build international conservation partnerships. The current theme for grants is "wildlife conservation through community engagement." Eligibility extends to any organization or group that is able to undertake projects in this theme. Grants are up to AUD 20,000 for projects of one year.

Birdfair/RSPB Research Fund for Endangered Birds - Deadline: Sept 30, 2014

The British Birdwatching Fair (Birdfair) and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) jointly provide small grants for research on birds listed by IUCN as “endangered,” “critically endangered,” or “data deficient.” Priority is for researchers working in their own countries, particularly in collaboration with BirdLife’s partners. The maximum grant is $2,000, with preference for smaller requests.

The Christensen Fund - Deadline: Applications for pre-project proposals accepted Sept 1-30, 2014

The Christensen Fund makes grants to indigenous-led and community-based organizations for projects that combine biodiversity with cultural diversity. Most grants are in the range of $50,000 to $100,000 for one or two years. Applications will be accepted in the following programs: African Rift Valley; Central Asia; Northwest Mexico; Global; and SF Bay Region.

Erik Hosking Trust - Photos, Art, & Writing about Birds and Natural History - Deadline: Sept 30 (annually)

The Erik Hosking Trust supports projects of scientific and conservation value on birds and other subjects of natural history through the media of writing, photography, painting, and illustration. Grants of up to £750 may be awarded to suitable candidates from any country.

Ornithological Society of the Middle East - Research Grants - Deadlines: Jan 31, May 31, Sept 30 (annually)

The OSME's Conservation and Research Fund makes grants to support bird research in the Middle East, Caucasus, and Central Asia. Grants average about £500. 

African-Eurasian Waterbird Agreement - Small Grants Fund - Deadline: Oct 10, 2014

AEWA makes grants to support waterbird conservation in eligible African countries of the African-Eurasian Flyways. Grants are up to $20,000 for projects of up to two years in African AEWA contracting parties. Proposals can be submitted by any national governmental agency or any national or international non-governmental agency/organization involved with the conservation of migratory waterbirds and/or their habitats in the respective eligible country.  Proposals need to be endorsed by AEWA's national focal points.

L’ORÉAL-UNESCO Regional Fellowships - Sub-Saharan Africa - Deadline: Aug 21, 2014

Women scientists who are nationals or permanent residents of any country in Sub-Saharan Africa can apply for the 2014 L’Oréal-UNESCO regional fellowships. The program offers five fellowships of €5,000 each to African Ph.D. students,  and another five fellowships of €10,000 each to African postdoctoral researchers. The age limit for applicants is 40 years for Ph.D students, and 45 years for post-doc researchers.

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science - Fellowships - Deadline: Aug 27, 2014

The RONPAKU fellowships are a program of the JSPS to support students from Asia, the Middle East, and Africa to pursue PhD degrees from Japanese universities. Each fellow submits a research dissertation co-supervised by an advisor in Japan and an advisor in the fellow's home country. The fellows do not pursue doctoral courses in Japan (i.e., dissertation only). RONPAKU awards about 30 fellowships a year across all subject areas. The application deadline is 27 August 2014 for submissions from Japanese universities; applicants send their documents to their prospective Japanese advisor in advance of this deadline.

International Smart Gear Competition - Deadline: Aug 31, 2014

The 2014 International Smart Gear Competition seeks innovative, environmentally friendly ways to reduce the amount of fisheries bycatch. Open to all, the competition has attracted entries from all kinds of people who care about fishing— from gear technologists and fishermen to engineers and chemists. The international judges panel includes fisheries experts, gear technologists, fishermen, scientists, researchers and conservationists. Grand Prize – $30,000; Runners-Up (2) – $10,000 each; Special Tuna Bycatch Reduction Prize – $7,500; Special Marine Mammal Bycatch Reduction Prize – $7,500.

Otto Kinne Foundation Ecology Institute Prize - Deadline for nominations: Aug 31, 2014

Each year, the Otto Kinne Foundation invites nominations from research ecologists worldwide for the Ecology Institute Prize (€6,000) and the IRPE Prize (€3,000). In 2014, the Foundation calls for nominations in limnetic ecology. 

Joke Waller-Hunter Initiative - Deadline: Sept 1, 2014

The Joke Waller-Hunter Initiative offers grants to advance the leadership and learning of junior persons working for -- or affiliated with -- environmental civil society organizations in developing and emerging countries. JWH especially encourages the nomination of young women and local community leaders.

Panthera's Rabinowitz-Kaplan Next Generation Prize - Deadline:Sept 1, 2014

Panthera offers the Rabinowitz-Kaplan Next Generation Prize ($15,000) to recognize an individual under age 40 who has already made a significant contribution to conserving wild cats.

Acumen Fund Fellows Program - India East Africa - Deadlines: Sept 1 (India); Sept 8 (East Africa)

The Acumen Fund seeks to harness the power of social innovation to create solutions to the world's most pressing problems. Past fellows have included several in smallholder agriculture, renewable energy, waste management, fair trade, and other areas.

David H. Smith Conservation Research Fellowship - Deadline: Sept 12, 2014

These two-year postdoctoral fellowships in conservation research enable outstanding early-career scientists to improve and expand their research skills while directing their efforts towards problems of pressing conservation concern.

ONE Africa Award - Deadline: Sept 12, 2014

The ONE Africa Award honors the exceptional work of individuals and organizations based in Africa to help Africa achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The amount of the award is $100,000, which may be split into more than one prize.  Eligibility for the award extends to civil society organizations, non-governmental organizations, and other groups based in Africa that can demonstrate commitment and success in advocacy to promote the attainment of one or more of the MDGs.

Tyler Prize - Deadline for nominations: Sept 12, 2014

This is an annual prize of $200,000 to recognize exceptional accomplishments in environmental science, energy, or medicine. The Tyler Prize can be awarded to living individuals or public or private institutions anywhere in the world. Several past prize winners have been distinguished in scientific and technical areas such as the global nitrogen cycle, global biodiversity assessments, wastewater treatment in developing countries, and others relevant to the link between environment and development.

Future for Nature Award - Deadline: Sept 15, 2014

The Future for Nature Award recognizes internationally outstanding efforts to conserve wild animals and plants. Work related to endangered species (IUCN's Red List) is a priority. Candidates for the award should be no older than age 35. The Award offers international recognition, financial support, and reinforced linkages to an international conservation network. 

World Academy of Science - Post Doctoral Fellowships - Deadline: Sept 15, 2014

For developing countries, and especially the Least Developed Countries, PhD scientists help build a foundation for scientific strength and human prosperity. TWAS offers more than 300 PhD fellowships a year at some of the most respected institutions in the developing world. These fellowships are hosted in Brazil, China, India, Kenya, Malaysia, Mexico and Pakistan. New fellowships in new countries are expected in the months ahead.

Commonwealth Scholarship Commission - Commonwealth Professional Fellowships - Deadline: Sept 18, 2014

The Commonwealth Professional Fellowships support mid-career professionals from developing Commonwealth countries to spend a period of time with a UK host organization for a program of professional development. Applications are sought within fields that include agriculture/fisheries/forestry, environment, and others. Fellowships between one and three months may be extended up to a maximum of six months. Applications are submitted by UK organizations, not directly by prospective Fellows.

Government of the Czech Republic - Scholarships - Deadline: Sept 30, 2014

The Czech Republic provides scholarships to support foreign nationals from developing countries at public institutions of higher education in the Czech Republic. The fields of study include ecology, wildlife management, natural resources, forestry, and tropical agriculture (among others).

Internships - Student Conference on Conservation Science - Deadline: Oct 18, 2014

The conference internship scheme enables students to extend their visit to the UK for up to four weeks after the conference to carry out mutually beneficial work with conservation organisations or academic institutions. The internship scheme aims to to help develop the careers of promising conservation scientists and to strengthen and catalyse north-south collaborations. SCCS will provide financial support for some students from developing countries and eastern Europe. Bursaries can be used to cover travel and conference expenses.

Whitley Fund for Nature - Awards - Deadline: Oct 31, 2014

The Whitley Fund for Nature (WFN) is a UK-registered charity that offers “Whitley Awards” to outstanding biodiversity conservation leaders around the world. The awards are both an international prize and a form of project funding (currently £35,000 over one year). Whitley Awards are open to biodiversity conservation leaders working in countries or regions of which they are nationals, and that are not defined as high-income economies by the World Bank (with exceptions).

Netherlands Fellowship Programmes - Application deadlines vary by sub-programs

The programmes promote capacity building within organizations in 50 countries by providing training and education through fellowships for professionals. Fellowships are available for master’s degree programmes, short courses, and PhD studies. An NFP fellowship is intended to supplement the salary that you should continue to receive during the study period in the Netherlands. The allowance is a contribution towards your costs of living, the costs of tuition fees, visas, travel, insurance and thesis research. Eligibility:Professionals who are nationals of and work and live in an NFP country. The chance of obtaining a fellowship is increased for those working and Sub-Saharan Africa and for women. An individual’s employer must nominate them to be eligible.

Chevening Scholarships - UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office - Deadline: Nov 15, 2014

The Chevening Scholarships provide full or partial funding for full-time courses at postgraduate level, normally a one-year master’s degree, in any subject at any UK university. Chevening Scholars come from 150 countries, excluding the USA and the EU. Due to a tripling of the budget, the scholarships will support more than 1,500 individuals in year 2015-2016. Applicants complete the application forms for their chosen universities.
